What is HIV?
This is another sexually transmitted infection and is caused by a virus called the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus infects the immune system cells and effectively ‘disables’ the immune system so that the body’s ability to fight infections is diminished. Consequently relatively minor infections can be potentially life threatening. The development of specific anti-viral treatments has transformed this from a once fatal disease to a chronic illness.
